BERÜHRUNG
ETH Zurich, Studio Deuber, 2021
This project stems from an analysis of an image by German photographer Karl Blossfeldt. This led to a sculptural study of the word Berührung (Touch in German), which influenced the structural design of the entire building, emphasising the visual tension that exists when two bodies delicately touch each other. By repeating the effect of touching, the design resulted in a coherent holistic structure offering intriguing perspectives depending on the visitor’s position.
The phenomenon of touching was consequently taken up at various detailed levels of the structure. The building is organized by a series of elements, which are characterised by a column subtly meeting a cantilevered beam. The contact of the beams between each other concludes the theme of touch within the overall framework of the structure. Finally, the curvature of these beams creates spaces similar to those inside a tent, contributing to the visual lightness of the building.
The structure is located in the Royal Botanical Garden in Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is made of timber and unites - through its materiality and interior gardens - the architecture with the surrounding nature. The structure is organised in 36 6.50x6.50m modules that form a 39x39m floor plan. The building was designed as a botany school, however the modularity of the structure would make it suitable for other programs.
All in all, the phenomenon of touch occurs in various forms. It is observed from the small wooden connections between single elements to the overall structure. The graceful contact of the bodies is the guiding principle of the project, creating an aesthetically pleasing and holistic whole. The repetition of these unusual points of contact creates interesting perspectives both inside the building and towards the surrounding nature.
